for double brass quintet
AmeriCanadian Rhapsody is an arrangement of a work written for and premiered by the Rose High School String Orchestra in 2003. The work is a musical quodlibet that incorporates the J.H. Rose High School Alma Mater (Canada's National Anthem), America the Beautiful, and a pentatonic melody (to represent Rose High School's Japanese-Canadian orchestra director). Like Americantus, this is IV esian in spirit. The anthems are first presented as unconventionally harmonized chorales before being combined and worked under the watchful and increasingly prominent eye of the pentatonic melody. The listener and performer are challenged to recognize derivations and permutations of melodic and rhythmic material, as if perceived through an aural kaleidoscope.
