Ode for the Birthday of Queen Mary, 1694
This ode is the last of six birthday pieces that Purcell composed for Queen Mary, wife of William III. It was performed for the 33rd birthday of the Queen on April 30, 1694. The queen died in December of the same year. The poet of the shallow, conventionally flattering text is unknown. It took a genius like Purcell to make this brilliant work out of it. The edition is part of the Trinity syllabus 2007 (grade performer's certificate)
