Pleyel's five cello concertos have wrongly led a shadowy existence, compared with the concertos by contemporaries such as Joseph Haydn. With his independent contributions to the genre, which belong to his intellectually most stimulating works, Pleyel once again impresses by his imagination and musical elegance.
