This concerto by Gerald Near was conceived in the grand traditional manner. The movements follow the usual form for a concerto: Sonata-allegro, Slow movement (in no particular form) and Rondo (Toccata). It is scored for chamber orchestra in a desire to make the work more practical and accessible.
The orchestra called for is a relatively small one with minimum strings, 6, 6, 4, 4, 2: 1 flute, 1 oboe, 2 clarinets in A, 1 bassoon, 2 trumpets in Bb, and 1 trombone.
Duration: 22 minutes, 30 sec.
