Morning Has Broken

The melody of the song leads on the one hand into the Celtic world of the Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland and on the other hand shows the power of a melody with convincing lyrics - even in a completely unusual interpretation. From 1817 to 1890 Mary MacDonald lived on the island of Mull, who wrote songs and poems in her mother tongue, Gaelic. Among them was the popular Christmas song "Infant of Glory, Child born of Mary". The melody for this song is called Bunessan and is derived from the place on Mull where Mary MacDonald lived.

Probably in the 1930s, the English writer Eleanor Farjean (1881-1965) was commissioned to write a thanksgiving song for children to which the melody "Bunessan" was to be added. The first verse of her text, which quickly became known and popular, reads in the version freely translated into German by Gisela Zimmer: "The morning is beautiful, look out the window, born all over again, he gives the day as a present. Take it and rejoice, thank you and think another new day is coming for me." Rock music in its beginning was seen by most groups as a "rebellion against all English". An upheaval became apparent at the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s. In 1972 Cat Stevens recorded the melody of "Bunessan" with the lyrics "Morning has Broken" by Eleanor Farjean - and landed a world success that has not yet passed.
