Music at the transition from the 18th to the 19th century is still associated with the names of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. However, we are largely in the dark about what was consumed from day to day.

It includes the music of Christian Gottlob August Bergt. His symphonies and his chamber music, his oratorios, but especially his 'Lieder' were well-know; enjoying great popularity from Leningrad to Philadelphia.

This study gives an insight into the life of Bergt as a teacher, organist, composer and conductor. It presents his instrumental works in analyses and allows direct access to his compositions via an index of works. The volume includes a comprehensive music section and a bibliography.
