Max was born in the English capital as the son of the London-based German pianist Ernst Pauer. He received his pianistic training with his father at the Royal Academy of Music and studied composition with Vincenz Lachner at the Karlsruhe Conservatory from 1885. After completing his studies, he taught at the Cologne Conservatory from 1887 to 1897, then at the Stuttgart Conservatory until 1924, whose direction he took over in 1908 and transformed the institute into a modern college of music. In 1924 he moved to Leipzig, where he was director of the Consesrvatory until 1932. Between 1933 and 1934 he finally directed the Musikhochschule in Mannheim.
As a pianist of worldwide renown, Pauer composed mainly piano works - his etudes are still regarded today as a particularly valuable contribution to educational literature and are still widely used. In addition, Pauer, who was a vehement advocate of the faithful reproduction of music, published a number of critical editions, including Beethoven’s piano sonatas.
