“Hats off, gentlemen, a genius” is how Robert Schumann begins his famous review of Chopin’s second opus. And he was right: The composer, pianist and piano teacher Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849), born in Żelazowa Wola near Warsaw, is considered a revolutionary in piano playing due to his melodic, rhythmic and harmonic innovations. Chopin’s work as a teacher still has an impact on today’s piano pedagogy, for example in his light touch playing technique, and in his use of the Bel Canto method as a model. The piano was his whole world, and there is no composition by Chopin that is not at least accompanied by piano.
Chopin’s mother was Polish, and his father was French, and in the Chopin Polonaises and Chopin Mazurkas, Chopin, who emigrated to France at the age of 21, expresses his love for his native Poland. He was one of the first composers in the 19th century to put a strong emphasis on national identity, along with composers like Edvard Grieg and Franz Liszt.
About 230 works by Chopin have survived, including the virtuoso Chopin Impromptus, Rondos by Chopin, and Chopin Waltzes.
Chopin died in Paris of tuberculosis, and at his expressed wish, his sister Ludwika brought his heart back to Poland, and it is housed in the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw.
